Why Iron Man Will Be Huge

Paramount is pulling out the stops with the promotion of Iron Man as evidenced by this massive 8’ x 15’ theater lobby display. Why all the hype? Because everyone wants to fly!

If you’re like me you probably jumped off the porch deck with a red cape tied around your neck pretending to be Superman. Childhood dreams are what will make Iron Man soar. Early clips focus heavily on the “learn to fly” theme.

Tony Stark has no super powers beyond his incredible ingenuity and brilliance as an inventor. No radioactive spider bite, Kryptonian blood or mutant chromosomes. He creates a suit of armor to fight evil, but before all that, he figured “…might as well fly, bro!” (He’s Californian).

A few tweaks and some help from the most sophisticated computer system in the world (named Jarvis) and you have the second incarnation of the suit, the Mark II:

Alas, he can’t stop tinkering. After the late night practice sessions and some “hot rod red” thrown in, he’s out-running fighter jets!

Mark III:

The other reason this movie will be huge is the sheer number of gear heads out there. There’s a reason NASCAR is our national pastime behind the NFL and way ahead of MLB and the NBA. We love fast cars. It was Hot Wheels and Matchbox that got me hooked. Take a look at a clip promoted during NASCAR races. Notice the jack sounds and the hood chest-plate slamming shut when Mr. Stark armors up!
