Wham-O's Magic Window

Magic-Window.jpg

Someone recently e-mailed me describing this novelty from their youth, not knowing what it was called or who made it. Well here it is, Wham-O’s Magic Window!

No toy company could make a toy sound cooler than the copywriters at Wham-O. Frisbee was a “New gyroscopic airfoil!” Hula-Hoop was fun because it could “rotate perpetually with body-english!” Super Ball was “The most fantastic ball ever created by science!”

Not to be outdone, the Magic Window had VOLCANIC ACTION and was made of “MILLIONS OF MICRODIUM CRYSTALS.” The cool thing about this toy was that the two colors of “crystals” would not mix, but stayed separated somehow to create “magic action,” “lacy flower patterns,” and “foaming, swirling effects!”

This toy was produced by Wham-O in 1973.

Well Carmyn has two, but I don’t know if she’s selling. Ebay always seems to have a few up for auction. Happy hunting!

Posted by: Tim at March 4, 2005 08:24 AM

how many different colors were made? I’ve only owned a blue one, but heard that there was a pink one that glowed int the dark?

Posted by: wham-dogg at March 5, 2005 05:24 PM

I’m not sure if it glowed in the dark or not, but there definately was a pink one because I’ve seen it on ebay.

Hello-
The white sand in my Magic Window seems to be “sticking” and not flowing as easily as it should.
Does anyone know why this would be and how I could correct it?
Thanks so much…..
Sarah

Posted by: Sarah at April 10, 2005 06:48 PM

Not sure how to fix that Sarah. Sounds like moisture got in there.

I had one with pink and blue and it indeed, glowed in the dark

Whamo,
Last week a co-teacher and I were trying to figure what the contents of the Majic Window. Our young students wanted to know the answer to this question and all we could say was some kind of powder. It does not work to say i don’t know to a handful 0f three-year-olds.
Help, Miss Lori

Posted by: Lori Nowakowski at June 4, 2005 09:11 PM

Lori, I’ve heard from a reliable source that it is not sand but tiny glass beads of different sizes that give the Magic Window its Magic.

Posted by: Tim at June 6, 2005 06:52 AM

It’s amazing how fast a favorite toy can transport us back in time. Thanks for reminding us Kristin.

Posted by: Tim at July 31, 2005 07:27 AM

The Magic Window - I have the blue - has three colors of sand - blue, black, & white. The black is heavier than the white, and the blue is heavier than the black, and that’s where the magic comes from. I emailed the company about a year ago, and (they actually responded)they said if they got enough requests, they may start making them again. Just food for thought.

You guys love this thing! I have a friend at Wham-O and I will suggest to him that his comnpany should bring it back. Try Ebay Mary Ellen, that’s where I got this one.

Posted by: Tim at September 18, 2005 04:56 AM

I looked all over for this toy and hope they will start making them again. I spent hours playing with it as a child and would love to be able to buy them for my children and grandchildren!

I have a large wall mounted wham-o magic window from the 70’s. It’s about 3 feet square and must weight about 45 pounds.
Can anyone tell me how many were made andd maybe a value…it has the wham-o stickers and it’s numbered….My father was friends of the VP of wham-o and I would get proto type toys to play with all the time.

i would like to get some price on a magic window that is three by three

Posted by: dan at August 29, 2006 06:54 PM

I loved my Magic Window. Wish I could find it- not sure if it’s in a box somewhere or if my mother threw it out. I hope they make them again. I think they would make alot of money off them.

I work for an agency that provides services to homeless women and children and it has become a favorite toy of both kids and Moms! It came in a donation and we kept it to use instead of giving it away. I too would like to be able to get at least one more.

Posted by: Kathy at October 20, 2006 04:59 PM

I used to lay my Magic Window flat on the floor & tap it with my fingers & it would make the coolest kind of viens of sand. That was great. It was also fun to try to completely seperate the colors of sand by turning it slowly. sigh. I wish I knew where it went. I guess I’ll have to do the ebay thing too.

Posted by: Kristopher at February 28, 2007 08:39 PM

Even through moving between parents throughout the years, I managed to keep my magic window. My kids played with it for a while and then I put it away. Today, I came across it in a drawer and I’m bring it back out since they are teens and all my old stuff is ‘cool’ again. I just wish it wasn’t so scratched, I would love to find another one.

Posted by: Amy at March 6, 2007 11:37 AM

I am so excited to here that wham-o may start making these again! I had one when I was young and there was pink, white and yellow sand in it and the yellow sand glowed in the dark. My sister had the blue and it did not glow. I remember tapping it to get the “vein” look too. I flows so smoothly that it looks like water. I know mine is some where around here, I’m going to go find it!!!!

Posted by: Dena at March 9, 2007 09:06 PM

My Sister and I would play for hours, I have five children and would love to get some for them. I e-mailed wham-o the same comment.

Posted by: Michele Richards at April 12, 2007 09:54 AM

Do you know somewhere where I can buy one of these majic windows still? My son found one today and I told him of my childhood favorite toy. PLEASE HELP

Posted by: lori doughty at April 12, 2007 06:40 PM

Ebay is your best bet, but get ready to pay. It’s a well sought-after toy! Happy hunting.

Posted by: Tim at April 13, 2007 05:58 AM

i just stumbled across a magic window that my stepmom had found and was really amazed at how amuzing it was and i really think that producing them again is a great idea but try and do more than the original colors

Sally I am thinking about putting the pink one i have on ebay. But I am not sure yet you can email me at jrjm1317@msn.com. Sorry not sure what I am going to do yet.

My wife picked one up at the local thrift store for a dollar! Sweet! Our kids love it, but I think my wife and I love it even more.

I’d love to find out what materials go into the sand they use, as I have an idea to make a giant one on a pivoting stand. I don’t want to break ours apart.

Posted by: vargaso at May 25, 2007 02:43 PM

In graduate school I wrote a paper on the material properties that allow this kind of toy to be made. The particles are little gl*ss spheres, the blue ones are about twice as big as the white. Wham-o’s patent (3692382) is a really great read, if you’re a geek like me. I could play with this for hours when I was younger.

You can find similar (but not quite as cool) ones that are filled with water and different sized/colored sand at boardwalk souvenir shops.

I have the pink, yellow, and white glow-in-the dark magic window, and I’m really curious as to what they used to make it glow. The yellow is what glows the most, although the pink appears to glow too. If I set it on top of a lamp for a half hour or so, and then turn out the lamp and go to bed, it will glow for hours. Literally. I’ll turn out the light at 10:00, and by 4am, it will still have a glow. What did they use to make it glow for so long?

Posted by: karen at September 15, 2007 10:29 PM

I have one of the “Wall Decor” Magic Windows, 30”x30” in a chrome frame, made by Wham-O and obtained from them by a friend at a trade show, I’m curious as to how many were made and if they were ever sold or were specialty items.

I emailed the wham o company on Fri Nov 16 and told them to check ebay 4 magic windows had been auction in Nov prices ranged from $29-$90+ with over 20 bids for each auction. Maybe they will see that there is a brand new market for these.

As many Magic Window fans know, I’ve just completed a first draft of a new book celebrating WHAM-O’s 60th Anniversary next year. In the course of writing it I went to WHAM-O headquarters and looked through their archives, chatted up the long-timers, and “had their ear.” I shared with the heads of the company that by far the one toy/novelty from the past that I get the most requests for (at this site, on the radio, etc.) is Magic Window. I urged them to bring it back. Stay tuned…

Can any one help me find a magic window for sale. PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!

Posted by: Mariann Hall at November 27, 2007 09:32 PM

I have e-mailed Wham-O asking if they will start making Magic Window again. I am a secretary at a university math department, and the students just love to play with my Magic Window. Maybe our collective interest will convince Wham-O to re-produce them.

Posted by: Rosie at December 13, 2007 01:46 PM

oh i wish i had one of these. they are so unbelievably expensive on ebay. =( i too sent wham-o an email suggesting they remake it.

Posted by: Rachel at January 29, 2008 08:52 PM

I’m the fool that won the ebay bid for the magic window last fall for 110 bucks. The reasons for getting it is that its pink/white and glows in the dark and has the original stand as well. But no box cover thou. Is it too high to win or is it reasonable? I don’t care because when I got it, I was a kid again! :)

Posted by: Hickorydsp at February 21, 2008 10:40 PM

I still have my pink/yellow/white glow-in-the-dark Magic Window I received as a present from my parents in the late ’70s. I still love it!! It has a small crack in the middle but doesn’t leak. I thought about putting it up on eBay, but decided I couldn’t part with it. I hope they start making them again so I can get a new one for my daughter. I’m glad to see that there are still so many fans of this great toy out there!

Posted by: karey at February 25, 2008 01:16 AM

I know this is an old question, but about the sticky sand: mine did that, and my chemist husband got some kind of dessicant. We put it in a shallow box so the dessicant covered the seams on the edge. It fixed it up in a couple of days, and it’s been good again for years. Maybe the stuff you can buy at Michael’s to dry flowers would work?

Posted by: Vel at April 1, 2008 01:05 PM

I’ve bought 3 different Magic Windows from different sellers on Ebay in the past year. Why? To relive my childhood, of course. Anyway, I’m thrilled because I was able to get one that I never knew Whamo had made. It’s got light green sand, yellow sand and white sand in it. Beautiful! And, it glows in the dark! Plus, I have ths standard pink, yellow and white sand one and the dark blue, light blue and white sand one. Still looking for the dark blue, black and white sand one. Will eventually find it on Ebay.

A few months ago, I was hitting the weekend’s yard sale circuit while out riding my bike. Here in the PNW, it seems to be common practice to have a giveaway box; I suppose the owner believes the items in the box have no value, but doesn’t want to throw them away, either. I’d never seen a Magic Window (I grew up in the 70s in England and Japan as a military brat), but this piece of plastic containing blue and white sand that was in the give-away box caught my eye so I popped it into the basket of my bicycle. That evening, as I was talking on the phone, I became mesmerized by the swirling and melding…mountains and oceans formed in front of my very eyes. I can see why so many have such fond memories of these amazing “toys”. They possess stress-relieving, meditation-inducing qualities that induce peace and calm. All of this, and it didn’t cost me a dime…life is very good, indeed!
